Our goal at Woods Elementary is to build a positive school culture by increasing positive student interactions and respect for others.

Acceptance & Understanding of All

The Wolverine G.R.O.W.L.

The staff and students of Woods Elementary are devoted to living our Wolverine G.R.O.W.L. each day.  Everyone is committed to Giving their best effort, showing Respect for all, demonstrating Outstanding character, displaying Wolverine pride, and Leading by example. A G.R.O.W.L. Matrix was developed to provide students with examples and information that will allow them to align their choices and actions on campus with each component of the G.R.O.W.L. The examples and information are reviewed and referred to daily within the classroom and are shared with the Woods community through a spotlight section in our school's weekly newsletter. The Woods Wolverines are recognized and praised for their efforts in living out our G.R.O.W.L. through frequent G.R.O.W.L. Ticket Announcements. Students in the Human Relations Advisory Council meet with our principal on a regular basis. The purpose of this group is to share ideas on how we can strengthen our Wolverine GROWL, learn more about the culture of our school, and plan activities to promote positive student relations. In addition, one of the most prestigious honors at Woods Elementary is receiving the Mighty Wolverine Award. This recognition is presented at our quarterly awards assembly to students who embody our Wolverine G.R.O.W.L.

Positivity Project, Second Step & Character Counts

Woods Elementary is proud to  participate in the Positivity Project! All teachers have received Positivity Project training and teach weekly lessons to  empower our youth to build positive relationships by understanding, appreciating, and exemplifying the character strengths in us all. Additionally, partnership has been established between a Buchanan Area Counselor, Transition Team and Woods Elementary Teachers to implement lessons from Second Step and the Character Counts program. Second Step focuses on the social emotional learning (SEL) of our students and allows our campus to foster a more supportive, successful learning environment. Character Counts is a framework that is built upon the foundation of the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship. Second Step and Character Counts provide our students the tools and strategies needed to be positive, productive members of our community. Students exhibit kindness and respect to others and provide assistance for those in need of support. Wolverines that exemplify the Six Pillars of Character are eligible recipients of our True Blue Character Award. The greatest award is the moral character that students are developing and maintaining.

Multicultural Education

Multicultural Education is integrated into the curriculum and classroom instruction for all grade levels. We promote awareness by celebrating diversity through a variety of lessons and events. In addition to reflective curriculum, school-wide events include our Multicultural Night, morning announcements, MPR and library displays, assemblies, and more.
